Travel Insurance and Hurricane Coverage

July 13, 2010 – 2:23 pm

Will your travel insurance plans give me back 100% of my money if there is a hurricane? Vickie

Hi Vickie,

The short answer is “no, travel insurance plans will not give you 100% of you money back if there is a hurricane”.

Having said that, depending on how a hurricane affects your trip determines if your trip cancellation travel insurance will give you any of your money back.

It’s possible to have a claim paid for a trip cancellation due to a hurricane. However, unless the hurricane was right at your cruise’s departure port, it’s more likely you will have a travel delay and fly to get caught up to your cruise.

Comprehensive car insurance costs up 14%

July 10, 2010 – 3:37 am

The average cost of comprehensive car insurance rose by 14.2% in the second quarter of 2010, compared with increases of 4.3% and 6.3% in the two previous quarters.

According to the Confused.com/EMB Car Insurance Price Index, £74 was added to the average premium in the three months to the end of June, with an annual increase of 31% costing £142.

The biggest quarterly shock was felt by 41-55 year olds because of the tendency for children to be included on policies.

Women suffered the worst, with female drivers of this age group facing a 14% penalty for having named drivers, other than their husbands.

Manchester and Merseyside, Inner London and Northern Ireland experienced the largest regional rises and the research revealed that the typical comprehensive premium now stands at £599.

Confused.com product director, Simon Lamble, comments: “This is a massive blow for motorists who have already suffered at the hands of petrol price hikes and insurance premium tax increases.”

He is expecting worse to come because price comparison sites have driven up competition and forced insurers to repeatedly slash their margins.

In January, Zurich announced that it was looking to raise prices by up to 20% and Mr Lamble is expecting the rest of the industry to follow suit, in a bid to get back to profit.

Passport Fees are Increasing on July 13, 2010

July 9, 2010 – 3:55 pm

I’ve been lazy renewing my passport, but I’m going to do it today. That’s because Passport Fees are increasing on July 13, 2010. I knew there was an increase coming, but I kept putting it off. Now I have to get going.

And, I can thank Lori Rice’s article on Galavanting for reminding me to take care of this.

Here are the basics:

  • First time applicants will be paying 35% more as the price for a passport book increases from $100 to $135.
  • Travelers will now be charged $110 instead of $75 to renew a current passport.
  • Likely the most difficult change to accept for many regular travelers, however, is adding additional passport pages. The fre
